A Whitby bodybuilder has secured his second national title in as many years and is now set to compete on the world stage in the USA.
Former Caedmon School and Whitby Community College student Tom Wood recently won the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation national final in the under-20s category.
The 19-year-old qualified for the competition after finishing second in the North East regional qualifiers, and as a result now has the chance to compete in the world finals in Miami at the end of October.
“I was absolutely ecstatic to win the national finals,” Wood said.
“It was a dream come true for me and the prospect of competing for a world title in Miami is very exciting.”
Wood initially started training in the Fitness Machine gymnasium in Silver Street with the aim of getting himself into better shape for his endeavours on the rugby pitch.
“I began weight training with my friend Jordan Samples when I was playing rugby for Whitby because I wanted to put on some size,” Wood added.
“I really got into it, I started watching videos on YouTube and it just went from there.
“I now train every single day and eat a very strict diet, it is hard work staying in this kind of shape, but I love it.”
Wood’s first major success came in 2014 when he won the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association title of Teenage Mr Britain.
“Competing involves presenting yourself on stage in front of a host of judges and posing for them in different positions,” he continued.
“At the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation events, every athlete is polygraphed and given a lie detector test, and winners have to take urine tests, all to ensure competitors are natural and not using banned substances.”
Wood’s latest title was secured in Liverpool last month when he finished first out of 13 competitors from around the UK.
Winning the national final has afforded him the chance to represent Britain at South Beach, Miami where he has the opportunity to pit himself against the top bodybuilders from around the globe.
