Staxton’s defeat at home to Ebberston, allied to wins for Staithes at Heslerton and Cayton at Scalby means that the three-horse battle for the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League premier division title will go down to the final weekend.

Staithes, who lead Staxton by a single point, will host their closest rivals on Saturday, but Cayton, who are only three points behind Staithes, will be confident of spoiling the party for both sides above them as they are at home to relegated Flixton 2nds for their final match.

Staxton had started the day in the driving seat, but must always have sensed that a home game with Ebberston would prove tricky, and so it proved.

David Morris, 42, James Armstrong, 37, and Jodie Robson, 27, all made decent starts for Staxton as they posted 202-9, spinner Sam Hardie, 3-40, the pick of the visiting bowlers.

Veteran Adrian Turnbull turned out to be the match-winner for the away team, with a superb unbeaten 91 from 132 balls, Ben Lockey proving to be a key player with 45 from 51 balls as Ebberston won with six wickets and two overs to spare.

Staithes made swift work of Heslerton, skittling the hosts for only 59 runs and knocking them off in 20 overs, losing five wickets in the process.

Stuart Theaker snapped up an excellent 5-8 for the new leaders, while Simon Bowes scooped 4-34. Malc Spaven top scored for the hosts with 26.

Rich Hegarty’s 24 in reply proved to be crucial as Staithes made hard work of claiming the win.

Cayton’s maximum points win at relegation battlers Scalby kept them in the hunt for the title.

Darren Foreman’s troops posted 206-6 thanks to knocks from Michael Dennis, 49, Tom Sixsmith, 47, Aussie Nick Strangio, 45no, and Jake McAleese, 30.

The latter then capped a fine all-round day with 5-24 as Scalby slumped to 66 all out despite a plucky 31 from Alex White. Jake’s dad Steve rolled back the years to make a major contribution with 3-7 as Cayton won by 140 runs.

Scalby still have a chance of staying in the top flight as nearest rivals Forge Valley lost out by 91 runs at Filey.

Aaron Howard struck 58 and Josh Dawson 34 as the hosts were all out for 182, Carl Jackson taking 5-44 and Charles Tindall 4-40.

Ryan Baldry and Nathan Robson then bagged 3-12 and 3-33 as Valley slumped to 91 all out despite a defiant 34 from Jack Bradshaw.

Relegated Flixton 2nds eased to a 90-run win at home to Nawton Grange.

Mark Shackley smashed 53 and Stephen Hill 40 as the hosts made 218-9, Adam Ditchburn adding 26 and Liam Lowery 25, Adam Durrant taking 3-53 for Grange.

Jack Walmsley’s 4-14 then saw the away side dismissed for 128 in spite of a brave 56 from Charlie Allott.

The Division A title race is also going to be decided on the final Saturday after leaders Mulgrave suffered a 77-run loss at second-placed Seamer, who are now just six points behind the Whitby side.

Mulgrave finish their campaign at home to relegation-battling Cayton 2nds while Seamer head to Grindale on Saturday, both of which are tricky fixtures for the title rivals.

Gaz Lawton hammered a superb 90 as Seamer racked up 236-7, Dave Graham adding 40 and Rory Skelton an unbeaten 32.

Andrew Thompson and spinner Andrew Spenceley took 3-37 apiece as the visitors tried to stem the flow of Seamer runs.

Matty Morris bagged 3-30 as Seamer pegged the leaders back to 159-6 despite Kieran Noble’s 39 not out.

Sherburn edged closer to the drop after a 58-run loss at Settrington.

Pete Revis struck 41 as the hosts were dismissed for 137, but Steve Beal then took 4-14 as Sherburn slipped to 70 all out in spite of a plucky 39 from J Wharton.

Wold Newton’s relegation was confirmed by their six-wicket loss at Cloughton, Pete Milner taking an astounding 5-4 from 11.3 overs.

Henry Whelan’s 4-12 from seven overs helped the visitors crash to 42 all out, and despite 4-30 from Oliver West Cloughton secured the win that sent Wold Newton down.

Cayton 2nds boosted their chances of staying in the division with a 72-run at home to Grindale.

Spinner Matthew Kings, on loan from Muston, took 4-43 as the hosts posted 175-7, Brian Heywood leading the way with an unbeaten 53, while John Crowe added 34 and Jes Riley 26.

Mark Purvis, 32, and Zack Moore, 28, tried their best for the away team but fine bowling from James Ward, 3-12, and two wickets apiece from Tom Ward, Heywood and Simon Glave saw the visitors slip to 103 all out.

Brompton edged to a two-wicket win at Wykeham in a low-scoring contest.

Tom Pateman took 4-16 and Ross Triffit 2-7 as the hosts were skittled for 86, then Gareth Barnard and Ian Spence took three wickets each as Brmpton limped home.

Staxton 2nds secured promotion from Division B with a final-ball three-wicket win at Fylingdales, while Thornton Dale joined them after collecting 20 points as Bridlington 2nds conceded their fixture.

Rob Grove smacked 60 and Steve Husband 47 as the hosts posted 178-4, and an unbeaten 65 from Matty Pearson proved vital as Staxton clinched victory from the final ball of the game, Craig Hill and Mark Dove both hitting 35.

Ravenscar slumped to an eight-wicket loss at home to Scalby 2nds, but both sides have missed out on promotion this season.

Adie Hollingsworth scooped 4-10 and Tony Geall 4-14 as the hosts sank to 63 all out, Tim Barton’s 34 sealing the win.

Ganton hammered visitors Scarborough 3rds by 101 runs, Alastair Limb hitting 67 for the hosts.

Brad Milburn took 3-41 for Scarborough as Ganton were all out for 193 and then struck 20 as the away team slipped to 92 all out.

Horsley then snatched 5-24 as Seamer sank to 69 all out, Joe Tiffany top scoring with 32.
