REDCAR Bears speedway boss Brian Havelock has outlined preliminary details of the 2012 season with confirmation of the return of three of the 2011 team.
“I was delighted with the large turnout of fans and the interest shown,” Havelock told a packed meeting at the South Tees Motorsport Park.
“It went down very well that Aaron Summers, Matej Kus and Robert Branford will be on the team sheet when the tapes go up at the Motorpark next March.
“All had their first full season as a Bear in 2011 and the trio can progress further after putting down a firm foundation of performance.”
It is expected that club skipper and former World Champion Gary Havelock will soon confirm he will ride his 28th season in British Speedway with his local club, having started his career as a 16-year-old in 1985 at the defunct Cleveland Park Stadium in Middlesbrough.
Meanwhile, Havelock is waiting for a fitness report on Bears’ number one Jason Lyons, who broke his left femur in three places in a crash at Glasgow Speedway in early September.
Other options are being considered by the club should the veteran Australian not be fit to race.
On the fixture front, the Bears will participate in an early-season regional competition with the winners of the Northern Group comprising Berwick, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Redcar,Scunthorpe, Sheffield and Workington meeting the winners of the Southern Group in a grand final.
The groups will operate on a conference basis where clubs will select opponents to give five home and five away fixtures.
In the Knockout Cup, the Bears have drawn deadly north-east rivals the Newcastle Diamonds in the first round.
The Premier League campaign will see the 14 clubs competing on a one home and one away platform with the top six qualifying for a play-off system. The next six will take part in a separate competition while the last two in the league will have no participation.
