Bears bid to woo businesses

Redcar Bears speedway team are throwing open their doors in a bid to woo local businesses by promoting a free hospitality evening in the sponsors’ lounge - for guests who have never been to speedway before.

This will be on the night that the Workington Comets visit the South Tees Motorsport Park, South Bank, Middlesbrough on Thursday 31 March, for a challenge match at 7.30pm.

Commercial manager Steve Harland commented: ‘We tried a similar scheme last year and had some success with it so we thought we would try it again.

“If it gets us one extra sponsor it will have been worth it.

“Last season the club attracted new meeting sponsors from both East Cleveland and Whitby areas so we would be keen to see a similar sort of take-up.”

The criteria is one company is allowed up to four guests and a maximum eight businesses are allowed to utilise the club’s hospitality, elevated up on a decking area which has a unique and spectacular view of the action on the fast and furious 271-metre track from the first bend.

Guests receive a 15-minute briefing about the sport and the club lay on free programmes, a small buffet and drinks.

“It’s a great way of introducing people to the sport of speedway racing,” said Harland.

Although it is only a challenge match, the Redcar Bears will be keen to present a tougher challenge than they did last season as they were beaten home and away both in a challenge and in the league.

Harland said: “We’ve got a much better balanced team this year and we need to be strong at home to stand any chance of success elsewhere.”

“With four new signings in the team including the vastly-experienced Jason Lyons who obtained a nine point average with Birmingham last season, the Czech Republic’s Matej Kus and former Redcar Cubs rider Aaron Summers joining from Edinburgh for £10,000 - there is more optimism this time round.”

Those interested in attending should contact Steve on 07769 258035 or e-mail him at: on a first come first served basis.

Alternatively he will be at the club’s press and practice organised for Saturday 19 March from 3pm onwards.
