LEALHOLM Primary School have won a place in the North Yorkshire area final of the Drax Cup 2011, the biggest cricket competition for the under nines age group in the country.
The team came first in an eight-way mini tournament at Mulgrave Cricket Club beating local schools Airy Hill, East Whitby, Stakesby, Ruswarp, Sleights, West Cliff and Lythe.
Lealholm will now go on to face schools from across the region at the area finals on 23 June which are to be held at Dunnington Cricket Club.
The Drax Cup, now in its fifth year, is sponsored by Drax Power Limited and organised by The Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with the Yorkshire Cricket Board and Yorkshire School’s Cricket Association.
Andrew Gale, Yorkshire club captain, is ambassador for the Drax Cup 2011 together with Katherine Brunt, Yorkshire and England player.
The finals will be played at Headingley on Sunday 3 July prior to Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire in the Friends Provident Twenty20 Cup.
