Yorkshire derby kicks off Blues’ home campaign

WHITBY Town welcome Bradford Park Avenue to the Turnbull Ground this Wednesday (17 Aug) with a 7.45pm start, writes Andrew Snaith.

It’s the first home Evo-Stik Premier game of the season - sponsored by the Whitby Gazette - for Tommy Cassidy’s men with Avenue one of the promotion favourites, despite an opening day defeat.

John Deacey’s side went down 1-0 at home to new boys Hednesford Town on Saturday. The Staffordshire club were moved across from the Southern League during the summer.

Avenue have 11 wins to Whitby’s four in past meetings, with their most recent success coming in March, 2-1 at the Turnbull, after a disputed penalty settled a dour encounter.

Cassidy later said he “felt sorry for fans having to watch that”, before pledging an improvement this season.

The Blues’ manager will be hoping the return of defender Ibby Hassan from suspension will help. Former Hartlepool United midfielder Marc Ellison, fresh from a spell in Sweden, is also available after a ban and may make a competitive debut.

Goalkeeper Dave Campbell will again miss out due to an ankle injury.

Admission for 2011-12 at the Turnbull Ground is £8 adults, £5 concessions and £2 under 16s. Children can enjoy a 50% discount if they’ve collected the tokens inside Friday and Tuesday’s Whitby Gazette. They must be accompanied by a paying adult however.

Town are again at home on Saturday (20 Aug) when Derbyshire outfit Mickleover Sports visit.
