Injury-plagued Whitby RFC needed a goal of the season contender to avoid a potential banana skin at basement club Cayton Reserves on Saturday.
Boss Ste Mothersdale had 10 players unavailable due to injuries and work commitments, having to play myself and calling on experienced Aidy Moore. The patched-up squad fought hard and created plenty of chances but, against the run of play, goalkeeper David Fish kicked Purves’ back pass to a Cayton striker who curled in - their only strike on goal in the game.
Chances came and went and RFC were getting frustrated before levelling on 72 minutes.
Hogarth latched on the end of a pass in the area to slot past the keeper.
The winner came in the 83rd minute and with it a goal of the season contender from Damon Craig, lobbing the keeper from the halfway line.
Club held out and manager Mothersdale praised the fight and determination of the injury-hit squad with 10 regulars out.
“We could have felt sorry for ourselves but this just proves the spirit of squad,” he said.
Man of the match: Mike Purves - ran his heart out all game.
