Whitby Maroons were finally crowned champions on Saturday after a 72-0 demolition of Jarrovians meant they could not be caught.
Already promoted Maroons were denied the Durham and Northumberland League third division title in their last outing, when they were beaten by fellow title-chasers Houghton.
The Maroons’ enormous win on Saturday confirmed a richly deserved title while there was a surprise home defeat for Houghton, who had an off day against Yarm.
Whitby coach Darryl Grason told the Gazette this week: “We have two fantastic challenges in the next two weeks.
“Firstly, Newton Aycliffe in the league and then Northallerton who have just made it to Twickenham in the Yorkshire Silver Trophy semi-final, both at home, and we need to be at our best in these games to win.”
Whitby’s opponents this coming Saturday, Newton Aycliffe, hammered Washington, and there were home wins for Chester-le-Street, Prudhoe and Richmond.
Maroons’ next two games kick-off at 3pm.
