Fishburn Park ladies have made a strong start to 2015 with a 3-0 win over Brompton.
It was a tough start to the game with the wind very much against the Whitby, giving Brompton good chances in the first 10 minutes to open the scoring.
Fishburn, however, managed to hold off from conceding with strong defending.
After making a fantastic tackle, Laura Jackson hurt her ankle and could no longer play on.
Jess Purvis came on, making her first appearance for the team this season, but this left Fishburn with no further substitutes.
Persistence paid off in the 35th minute when Charlotte Walker put a great ball into Sam Burrows on the edge of the area and she volleyed the ball into the top right corner.
In the second half, Fishburn came out much stronger, gaining a second goal nine minutes into the half.
Walker and Burrows once again combined with Burrows’ power strike into the corner left the keeper stranded.
Fishburn had many opportunities to increase the lead, with great link-up play on both wings from Lois Harkin and Rachel Avery, but struggled to convert the chances.
In the 82nd minute, Harkin made an excellent run down the wing, cutting in and playing a looping ball into the path of Ruth Welford who struck it into the bottom left corner.
Player of the match: Ruth Welford.
