With a depleted squad, Fishburn ladies faced strong opposition in Stokesley for the County Cup semi-final.
Stokesley started a lot stronger, attacking from kick-off and winning a number of corners.
Despite defending well, on 15 minutes the deadlock was broken when Stokesley’s power and height dominated in the box and the ball was bundled into the net.
Stokesley soon doubled their lead. Fishburn keeper Denise Reddy saved well from a strong shot, although Stokesley reacted quickest and their attacker tapped the ball in at the back post.
Fishburn battled back and were rewarded with a goal on the half hour.
Stokesley failed to deal with an Ellie Gordon corner and Charlotte Walker got a shot away. Although it didn’t quite have the power, it was met at the back post by Sam Burrows who ensured it crossed the line.
Captain Louise Middlemas pulled up with an injury, causing her to leave the field and miss the rest of the game, quickly followed by an ankle injury to Burrows, leaving her with no choice but to try to walk off the injury as Fishburn had no more subs.
Stokesley took advantage of this, along with some bad refereeing decisions and were added three more goals before half-time.
Although it was a big ask to come back, a change of formation led to Fishburn creating more chances although the Stokesley defence held strong and limited any shots.
At the other end, keeper Reddy had to make a few more great saves to ensure Fishburn did not concede anymore.
Although a disappointing result, this was a fantastic achievement for Fishburn Park ladies, making it to the County Cup semi-final in just their second season.
Players of the match: Denise Reddy and Lauran Jackson.
