A THRILLING cup battle took place at Staithes with both sides hungry for goals.
United opened their account on 15 minutes when Neil Roth cut in from the left, placing the ball perfectly for Mike Woodhouse to score.
Staithes replied minutes later when Smithies and Gilding cut open the United defence for Gilding to score.
Almost from the kick-off, Staithes were notching another goal when Braithwaite hit a screamer from 20 yards.
The game was end-to-end with both sides attempting to gain control of the midfield.
The tie was all square just before the interval when Harris and Roth for United put together a great passing movement for Roth to blast the ball into the roof of the Staithes goal.
The second half opened with goals again. A Kirk free-kick for United was floated into the Staithes penalty area for Andy Smith to outjump the defence to score.
Minutes later, Staithes went on the attack and the ever-dangerous Smithies scored to level up the score again.
United then hit a purple patch. A sublime scissor-kick from Andy Smith and a 25 yard drive from Neil Roth within a minute opened up a two-goal lead.
This was followed when Mike Woodhouse was through on goal and chipped the keeper.
Staithes hit back strongly and threw caution to the wind in an effort to cut the deficit. Smithies was having a great game and hit two great shots only to see Weatherald in the United goal make excellent saves to keep his side ahead.
Smithies capped a great performance when he struck home a penalty but the visitors had sealed the game with a good second half display
