Following last week’s excellent point at Thornaby Dubliners, Fishburn Park failed to keep up their good run of Teesside League form at home to Nunthorpe Athletic.
The visitors had the better of the first half and this paid off just before the break when Dan Caney side-footed home at the far post after Park’s defence was split open by a precise through ball.
The home side started the second period a lot better and were soon back on level terms when top goalscorer James Organ-Simpson’s shot was fumbled by the Nunthorpe keeper with the ball squirming into the bottom corner.
The game became increasingly bad-tempered and the visitors were reduced to 10 men when their centre-half was dismissed for a second yellow card for kicking out at Park striker Jake Faichney.
Unfortunately, Park could not take advantage of having the extra man and paid dearly on 80 minutes when they dallied on the edge of their own penalty area.
Nunthorpe were awarded a free-kick for handball and the ensuing setpiece was dispatched brilliantly by Dan Ball finding the top left-hand corner of the net.
Fishburn threw caution to the wind and piled forward looking for an equaliser but could not find a way through a stubborn Nunthorpe defence.
In the second division, Staithes Athletic won 4-2 at Kader with James Armstrong scoring a brace.
