Sleights returned to the Scarborough League Second Division top two after inflicting just a third league defeat of the season on Scalby, last Saturday.

In the only Whitby area Scarborough League game to survive Saturday’s wind and rain, Sleights centre-half Andy Hardy opened the scoring for Sleights, at a gale-swept Caedmon School, inside five minutes, after turning home a corner at the near post.

But Scalby made the most of the blustery conditions when a speculative 35-yard effort from Gareth Olney was caught late by the wind to fly past keeper Dave Fish on the half-hour.

However, two goals in ten minutes restored the hosts’ advantage just before the break.

First, Andy Martin fired into the roof of the net after Ben Watson’s strong run, then Joe Leadley struck in a crowded box, soon after brother Sam had slammed against the underside of the crossbar from distance.

Such was the strength of the wind that the nearby linesman had to hold the ball down with his finger for the right-wing corner that Leadley steered home.

Early in the second half, James Howard’s men extended their lead as Marc Kipling gambled on a defensive slip, which duly came and rifled under onrushing keeper Kev Sunderland for 4-1.

The icing on the cake came midway through the second period. Substitute Sam Wiggins sprinted forward and put over a driven left-wing cross for Martin to turn home his second goal in three games.

”The wind ruined what promised to be a good game of football,” Howard lamented.

”We battled well, fought for every second ball and produced quality again at the right times.

“Saturday really was a case of beating Scalby and the elements.

In the end, we did both comfortably,” he added.

Howard then paid tribute to the young players who he gave a go to second-half.

”It was also pleasing to have Sam Wiggins, Mike Jeffrey and Michael Trotter involved with the firsts, showing that hard work with the reserves won’t go unnoticed,” he said.

Howard’s men host Flixton in the league tomorrow at Caedmon with a 2pm kick-off.
