Sleights have been promoted into Division One of the Scarborough and District Saturday League after a controversial reshuffle.
Following the resignation of Eastfield, Falsgrave and Falsgrave Reserves, four new teams were accepted into the league for next season – Eastway Sports, Sherburn, Tennyson and Falsgrave Athletic.
The move has delighted Sleights’ first team boss, James Howard, who told the Gazette: “We felt like we weren’t too far away from where we wanted to be at the start of last season come its conclusion.
“We wanted to be in with a chance of going up, and it was still in our hands going into the last two games.
“To be given this opportunity of competing in the top division is something which won’t be taken lightly by anybody associated with Sleights FC. The standard is high, and the teams are very strong.
“We will give it all we have got to warrant a place in Scarborough’s top tier.”
Howard was also pleased that Sleights had drawn Edgehill in the cup, which was “the icing on the cake” for him.
“If we want to compete at a high level, which we do, then we will meet these strong teams throughout the season.
“Like every other game we will compete in, we will approach it positively.”
Sleight have also appointed a new second team boss, Rob Winspear. He said: “I’ve always wanted to manage my own team and play the game how I think it should be played and now I have my chance and I will take it.
“I’m taking over a great bunch of lads and can’t wait to start working with them.
“It’s a great role and I would’ve been a fool to turn it down.”
However, not everyone was happy with the meeting. West Pier boss Andy Spivey branded the AGM “nonsnese” after his team were demoted into division two.
