Sleights have now won their last six outings after another comfortable victory, at a windswept Caedmon School, on Saturday.

Ryan Roe opened the scoring for Jim Howard’s men on 10 minutes with a standing overhead kick from the edge of the Flixton box.

The hosts then doubled their lead moments later after Roe’s left-wing corner was blocked on the line, but Andy Hardy made sure to claim his third goal in as many games.

Roe then fired a free-kick against the underside of the bar after Ben Watson was scythed down on the right edge of the box.

But Sleights didn’t have long to wait for their third.

Within seconds, Watson again went down, this time inside the penalty area, and James Fawcett gleefully slotted home the spot-kick.

Jake Faichney’s curling effort was well saved, but Sleights were to go in 4-0 up at the break as Watson sidefooted in at the second attempt after first clipping against a post.

The second half was a more even affair, however, and Flixton pulled one back thanks to Luke Chambers’ 60th-minute lob. But despite some nervous moments, substitute Michael Trotter made sure with a composed finish on the break after collecting Watson’s lay-off for his first-ever first-team goal.

”For the second week running the weather was shocking, but it is winter so what else can we expect?” was Howard’s verdict.

”I knew we had them beat before the game when their players said the wind was too strong to play in.” he added.

”We worked hard to keep the ball on the floor at every opportunity and our ability to do that saw us through.

“Our defence coped well with the conditions with Andrew Hardy and Joe Leadley doing especially well.

“Special mention to Sam Wiggins who slotted into midfield very well, looked composed and assured in posession and Mike Trotter scoring his first goal for the first team,” Howard enthused.
