SATURDAY LEAGUE: Pier and Newlands share spoils

Sean Exley put Newlands in front with a well-taken goal, Billy Logan levelling for the hosts on the half-hour mark.

Exley restored Newlands’ lead six minutes before half-time with a fine free-kick that eluded keeper Chris Ferrey.

Pier earned a point 11 minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty and Martin Cooper kept his cool to convert the spot-kick.

Exley was named as man of the match for Newlands.

Edgehill fought back from 1-0 down to earn a 5-1 home win against Whitby Fishermen to boost their title ambitions.

The visitors took the lead on 10 minutes, but 15 minutes later Mikey Barker levelled direct from a corner.

On the hour mark, man of the match Barker fired in his second and the man of the match completed his hat-trick five minutes later to make it 3-1.

Whitby were then reduced to 10 men when a player collected his second caution, and Danny Collins added a fourth to seal the points for Steve Clegg’s side.

The fifth final goal was an own goal, a Barker shot hit the post and rebounded onto a Fishermens defender’s leg and into the net.

Seamer Sports pulled away from the relegation zone with a 5-1 home win against Sleights, Ali Caw and super-sub Luke Delve hitting a brace apiece for the hosts.

Caw and Gaz Lawton both went close for the hosts in the first half, but they failed to finish their chances, but Alex Hamilton made no mistake when Lawton’s penalty rebounded out to him, handing Paddy Parke’s the 1-0 half-time lead.

Caw then went on to add two goals, one from the spot, while Delve came on to finish off the scoring for the hosts with a double, Sleights hitting a late consolation through Ben Cairns.

Midfielder Joe Gallagher and Caw shone for Seamer, with keeper Billy Welford the star man for Sleights.

Filey Town earned a 4-0 win in a scrappy encounter at lowly Westover Wasps.

David Brannan’s 20-yard left-footed strike opened the scoring for Town, Josh Young scoring a similar goal with his right to double the visitors’ lead.

Callum Gravestock made it 3-0 to the youthful Town side before half-time, Phil Dickens capping the win with his second-half strike.

Man of the match for Filey was Ben Briggs, who covered every blade of grass with a dynamic display in central midfield.
