WHITBY RFC made a winning return to action after the recent bad weather which had wiped out all of December, with a solid 3-2 win over FC Filey at a blustery and boggy Showfield.
Rhucroft won the toss and decided to kick with the wind first half and from the off, the home side dominated posession.
They took the lead inside 20 minutes when Brennan’s corner was flapped at by the away keeper and Rhucroft nodded home at the far post to hand the club the lead.
The lead was extended 10 minutes later when Hoggarth met another cross and headed into the roof of the net as the home side’s dominance was rewarded.
Filey struggled against the high wind and the home side should of been out of sight before the break, but Watsons’ drive was superbly tipped onto the bar.
The same player fell over his feet when he rounded the keeper and was in on goal, the score remained 2-0 at the break.
Filey had with the huge wind advantage in the second half.
Filey started the second half much stronger and Whitby RFC struggled to get out of their own 18-yard box.
As a result, the away side nicked a goal back with 15 minutes gone when a thunderbolt from 25 yards flew into the roof of the net and it was game on.
Filey pressed for an equaliser but were caught on the break when Hoggarth crossed and the loose ball fell to Rhucroft, who beat the keeper via a deflection and gave the two- goal cushion back.
Filey tried to get back into the game and scored with five minutes remaining but the home side hung on for a deserved victory going into next week’s derby against Fishburn Park Reserves.
