Hinderwell hotshot Beth Mead is “gutted” to have been forced to pull out of the England Under 23 squad for the Nordic Tournament next week.

The Sunderland ladies striker had been selected in the party for the trip to Norway where the Young Lionesses play three internationals.

But the 20-year-old former Caedmon College student has had to withdraw because of exam commitments at Teesside University, where she studies sport development.

“It clashes with one of my exams at Uni so I’ve had to pull out,” she said.

“I’m gutted.”

Mead has already represented England Under 23 this year, going on a training camp to Spain, where she made appearances in both friendlies against Sweden and the USA.

The striker has been one of the players of the first section of the Women’s Super League 1 programme, banging in four goals.

But while the Nordic tournament closed for Mead, it opened for her Lady Black Cats team-mate, Rebekah Bass.

The 22-year-old winger was called up for the competition which features three high-profile internationals.
