A club statement read: "Whitby Town recieved an approach from Blyth Spartans, and after fully consulting with Chris Hardy and his management team and agreed, in view of the player's loyalty and long service to the club, to inform him of the approach.

"The midfielder decided that he would like to speak to Blyth, who have offered him a longer deal with better financial rewards, which Whitby Town cannot afford due to our smaller home attendances.

"McTiernan signed terms with the Spartans on Thursday."

The 32-year-old made 435 for the Seasiders, and is currently sitting third in the club’s all-time appearances list and he also score 48 goals for the club over three spells.

The club statement continued: "Whitby Town would like to place on record its sincerest thanks to David for the effort and determination he has shown over his time with the club and wish him all the best for the future."
