WHITBY Community College’s grip on the North Yorkshire County Cup was cruelly snatched away from them by two late goals in the final.

The first half saw the college year 11s and St Aidan’s of Harrogate - the team they beat in last year’s final - working hard but a hard pitch and windy conditions at Stokesley made it difficult for any of the sides to create clear cut chances.

However, the second half came alive when Andy Menzies scored a towering header to take the college into an early second half lead.

The Whitby side kept pressing and dominated for 20 minutes and had several chances stopped by the St Aidan’s goalkeeper.

St Aidan’s made several changes up front and Whitby’s defence found it difficult to cope with the pace of the fresh attackers.

With only 12 minutes to go, it looked like Whitby would hang on for an excellent win but they succumbed to two well-struck goals by the St Aidans substitute who burst through on both occassions to deny Whitby the opportunity to hold onto the trophy they won last season.

College PE teacher Dale Corcoran said: “To get to the final two years running is an achievement in itself.”
