LOWLY-placed Great Ayton pulled off a shock win against Staithes in a keenly contested fixture.

With both sides out of cup competitions and Staithes in a comfortable league position, Great Ayton were looking for points to pull away from the lower reaches of the league table.

With no flair or fluency, the visitors took a half-time lead with a goal from Osborne although Smithies levelled for Staithes on the hour.

With Great Ayton battling well for the ball and Staithes not showing a lot of urgency to get forward to win, it seemed the match was destined for a draw until Rob McElroy coasted into the penalty area unchallenged and slotted the ball home for a 90th minute winner, leaving Staithes no chance to reply.
