THE home side eventually ran out comfortable winners in this game but were made to work hard to get a strong hold by a determined Brotton side.
For the first 30 minutes, it was all Staithes but a mixture of poor finishing and good defending by the visitors kept the scores level.
It was the visitors who scored with their first attempt on goal when Scott Templeman netted from the edge of the box after a mistake by Ward.
Staithes begun to take control of the game and kept coming forward and with time running out in the half, Smithies crossed for Gary Gilding to head in the equaliser.
Staithes could have taken the lead within 30 seconds of the restart when Gilding rounded keeper Tyreman but failed to finish.
Tyreman also thwarted Gilding again with a fine save as the home side pressed forward and on 60 minutes, Gilding eventually gave Staithes the lead, tapping in Smithies pull back.
The visitors lost the influential Matty Jones at this point and were restricted to playing on the break. On 70 minutes, a fine move from Staithes resulted in Gary Smithies volleying past Tyreman from an Armstrong cross.
With time running out, a mix-up in the home defence allowed Smithies to tap in his second and seal a 4-1 win for Staithes.
