Gibson double secures points for Staithes

STAITHES Athletic got their home campaign off to a flier with a fluent display to beat Loftus Athletic, who had made a good start to the season.

Loftus took the lead after three minutes when Theaker’s sliced an attempted clearance into his own net.

Staithes dominated the early play and were creating good chances. Joe Gibson was instrumental in a lot of the attacking moves and found himself with a goalscoring opportunity when a Richie Ward played the ball over the top of a static Loftus back line for Gibson to unleash a blistering shot past the keeper.

The home side kept up the pressure but could not manage to take the lead.

Early in the second half, Gary Gilding set up a great move down the wing allowing Richie Ward to hit a great volley, only to see the keeper pull off a brilliant save.

With 15 minutes to go, Staithes took the lead when Joe Gibson netted his second goal. At this point, Loftus began to dominate the game and put Staithes onto the backfoot as they pressed forward for a goal, but the home side managed to hang on.
