FISHBURN Park fell victim to inconsistency and poor defending when defeated by Billingham Synthonia Reserves in this MacMillan Bowl 1st round clash on Saturday.
It was a game that should have been wrapped up at half-time but time and again the home team, a division below Park in the Teesside League, were allowed a way back into the game.
It started well when Neil Waterfield scored for the second consecutive match via a now familiar Tose corner in the seventh minute.
The lead lasted less than 10 minutes when a mistake in defence allowed Synners players to pour forward and walk the ball into an empty net to level the tie.
Fishburn took the lead again when Mark Waterfield, still in attack following another Tose corner, received the ball at his feet with his back to goal. He flicked the ball over his head and turned at the same time, leaving four defenders trailing as he rounded the keeper to score a fantastic goal.
In the 30th minute Sam Richardson extended Park’s lead when he calmly placed his shot past the advancing keeper from just inside the penalty area. With a 3-1 lead the game should have been won but Park lost possession in attack and again poor defensive judgement allowed Billingham back into the game just before half-time.
In the 60th minute Joey Benali’s sublime chip extended Park’s lead and again the game should have been closed out but Billingham were allowed to score three times unopposed to take the tie to 5-4.
After all the plaudits received for the performance at North Ormesby the previous week, this game was in total contrast with only a handful of Fishburn players coming away with any credit.
Park return to Teesside League action on Saturday (17 Sep), when they travel to Dormans.
