CHRIS HARDY: Tough time for tired bodies

Chris Hardy's Blue Review
Chris Hardy's Blue Review

It was very much a case of mixed emotions after the two games last Thursday and Saturday.

Thursday’s 2-2 draw with Warrington Town was tough to take, but I was very pleased with the performance.

I thought we did more than enough to take the three points against a team gunning for promotion.

It was very hard to take them equalising so late on, but I was pleased with the performance of the players.

There was a good energy and workrate about the lads and they really deserved the victory.

Fast forward to Saturday’s game at home to Matlock and the performance levels dropped significantly.

I hate to make excuses, but asking these lads to play Thursday and then again on Saturday, with the amount of injuries and suspensions we have in the group at the moment, is a big ask.

As a result, there seemed to be a real lack of energy in the side on Saturday, and we didn’t really get into the game.

Luckily, we have bodies coming back into the squad at another busy time for us as a club.

We had a game last night against Grantham and then face Marine away on Saturday before we wrap up what has been a long, testing and disappointing season with games against Rushall on Tuesday and Buxton on Saturday.

Marine is one of the nicer away days in our division.

They have superb facilities and a good playing surface that suits our style and approach, so hopefully that will help us.

It will certainly be nice to get on a pitch like theirs after playing on heavy, bobbly pitches for the last month or two.

Last time we met Rushall we had the epic 3-3 draw after going 3-0 behind so early on.

Hopefully we won’t have to work so hard to get anything from the game this time around.

Now is really a time to reflect on the season we’ve had, while making sure we collect as many points as possible in our remaining games.

Planning has started for next season and we have sat down with our contracted players and hope to have answers either way from them in the near future.

Hopefully we can pick up some points between now and next Saturday.
