CHRIS HARDY: Over the moon with South Shields success

I was over the moon with our 2-1 victory at home to high-flying South Shields on Boxing Day.

Whitby Town boss Chris Hardy's column

There were a few variables in our favour, one being that the pitch is very soft at the moment and deteriorates quickly as a result - and I believe we knew when to play and when to avoid it better than Shields.

That said, we were superb and 100% deserved to come away with the three points on the day.

The form of Paul Blackett has been particularly pleasing since he came into the club on loan from Gateshead.

He has added another dimension to the group and having and out-and-out number nine makes us a much better side.

Having someone like Paul with us really takes the pressure off getting Brad Fewster back from injury and that is key as we don’t want to rush him back and him then suffer another problem as a result.

Hopefully we can keep Paul with us a little while longer, but that decision will obviously lie with Gateshead and what their plans for him are.

At the time of going to press with this column we were preparing for two games in quick succession, starting with a difficult trip to Morpeth on New Year’s Day and followed sharply by the visit of Gainsborough Trinity to the Turnbull on Saturday.

It is critical to our season that we maintain our recent resurgence and continue to pick up points, but these two fixtures will be tough.

It won't be easy as Gainsborough are battling against relegation and will be keen to pick up points.

I’d like to finish this column by wishing fans and readers a very Happy New Year.
