The derby games against Scarbrough Athletic are always very important to both the Whitby Town players and fans and Saturday’s meeting at the Flamingo Land Stadium will be no exception.

Scarborough have been given a welcome boost with the appointment of Darren Kelly as their new manager, and it will also lift their fans too.

I have met Darren before and I wish him all the best in his new job, but on Saturday our job is to get a result.

We have had the better of the recent games against Scarborough, and we expect a lively atmosphere on Saturday, but the Whitby players are used to these kinds of derby games in front of big crowds.

We have a lot of games in hand on several teams in the league, but we need to keep picking up points if we are to prove we are in a misleading position in the table because of these games in hand.

We went into Tuesday’s game at Pickering Town in the League Cup with a strong side and were hit by a late wonder goal from the home side.

We started off pretty well and got ourselves in front, but one of their lads put in a pretty reckless tackle and it seemed to lift the Pickering lads and they got back into the game and were level at the half-time interval.

There was very little between the sides in the second half, we hit the bar late on and then they scored the winner with a wonder goal.

This shows you how fine the margins can be in these cup games.

Greg Rutherford started on Tuesday to try and get him some more game time as he came back from injury, but unfortunately he had to come off in the first half as he picked up an injury on his calf.

He looks set for another spell on the sidelines and will be assessed over the next few days ahead of the game at Scarborough.

Corey Roper is also struggling with an ankle injury, and we will also be looking to see if he can make it for this weekend’s game.

Long-term injury absentees Bradley Fewster, Cal Patton and Dale Hopson all still remain out of action but hopefully come Christmas-time we may get some more news on Bradley’s injury.
