JAMES Armstrong’s 80th minute winner settled a hard-fought match for Staithes against a spirited Carlin How side.
The game was a scrappy encounter in the first 20 minutes with both sides struggling to string any passing movements together.
The home side gradually started to get on top and took the lead when James Rice’s free-kick was turned into his own net by the unlucky Joe Butters.
Staithes had further chances to double their lead but at half-time it was 1-0.
The second half started much the same as the first half with both teams struggling to gain control.
But on the hour, Carlin How got an equaliser when Breckon’s shot deflected into the path of George Garbutt who reacted first with a well-taken goal.
After this, Staithes began to take the match to the visitors and Foster had an effort cleared off the line as the visitors defended well until Gary Gilding latched on to Armstrong’s pass to steer the ball home.
The hosts missed chances to make the game safe and paid the price when the damgerous Garbutt was brought down in the box for a clear penalty.
David Sayers tucked home the spot kick to make it 2-2 with 10 minutes to go and both sides looked for the win. But immediatly from kick-off, Staithes caught Carlin How napping and Armstrong skipped through the defence to score the winner.
