Anxious finale as Blues see off Dales

WHITBY Town fans fought off a useful Fylingdales Reserves side, which included former Whitby Town forward jake Faichney, at Fyling Hall on Sunday.

The Seasiders’ supporters raced into a two-goal lead inside eight minutes.

First, Mark McCarthy drilled a 20-yard free-kick past Rich Coulson, aided by a slight deflection. Then the same player struck with a vicious angled drive that beat Coulson at his near post.

With Whitby well on top, they increased their lead mid-way through the first half. It was big Adie Moore, up from the back, who scrambled home a far-post header from a right-wing corner.

However nine minutes from time, with Dales strengthening their side through a late arrival, the hosts hit back.

It was Faichney who exchanged passes before firing low past Andy Wardill from the edge of the area.

But the visitors were to go in with a three-goal cushion at the break, as McCarthy completed his hat-trick thanks to another low drive, from near the right touchline, with 40 minutes on the clock.

As expected, Neil Purves’ men pushed on in the second half and grabbed a goal back, before the hour mark, as Mike Purves’ speculative shot ricocheted off the unlucky Moore.

The closing stages saw Dales pile on the pressure, Faichney’s solo run took him past three players, only for Wardill to pull off a tremendous point-blank tip-over.

Then nine minutes from time, the ex-Blue did strike, with a towering header, to make for a nervous finale.

Dave Masters cleared off the goal-line late on as the supporters did enough to hold on.
