FYLINGDALES 2nds won promotion to the Derwent Valley League division A on Saturday despite losing to Lockton.
‘Dales knew victory was essential if they were to stand any chance of pipping Whitby to the league title but with four regulars missing, it looked an uphill task.
Lockton chose to field first and their bowling was consistently tight throughout the 40 overs, only conceding 11 extras.
Keith Eddon took 5-55. Theo Clarke top scored for Fylingdales with 61, John Fewster contributed a useful 32 to the grand total of 142/9.
In reply, the Fylingdales bowlers kept a tight rein on Lockton and by the 20 over mark they were 56/ 4.
Victory seemed a distinct possibility. Then Nick Robson came to the crease in the 28th over with the score on 86 and quickly blasted 43 runs including four sixes.
Lockton passed Fylingdales’ total in the 37th over to give them victory.
But ‘Dales were cheered by results from elsewhere that guaranteed them promotion as runners-up in Division B, going up to the top tier for the first time ever with just a match at Sewerby to come.
