DARREN WALTERS: Goodwood packed full of drama

Solow was spectacular in the Sussex Stakes, enhancing his reputation has one of the best milers about.

I was pleased to see Muthmir show his class in the King George Stakes, The William Haggas trained five-year-old knuckled down well to win carrying top weight.

Legatissimo, ridden by Wayne Lordan, was hugely impressive on Saturday, in the Qatar Nassau Stakes Group 1.

Considering it was a Group 1 it was hard not to be.

She looked high class when powering away a furlong out, it will be interesting to see where she goes next.

The retired Richard Hughes will be sadly missed. The three-time champion jockey has been a true professional of the game, will be strange to see his name under trainer rather than jockey next season, hopefully he will be just as successful.

Another jockey to mention last week was Frankie Dettori, who i believe is riding now at the age of 44 as good as he ever has.

He has the ability to ride all types of horses. He was leading jockey over the course of the week which was no surprise considering the exceptional form he has been in throughout the season.

Looking towards this weekend’s racing, at first glance it does look tough, Ascot and Haydock both have quality cards.

Ascot has a fun factor this weekend, the annual Shergar Cup is a competition between jockeys representing either the girls, Europe, Great Britain and Ireland and the rest of the world.

The horses will run in different colours than usual to represent the teams.

Gabrial’s Kaka has slid down the weights and will surely win a decent race of this sought of mark.

Richard Fahey’s five-year-old run a much better race last time out and the 2.40 Shergar Cup Mile looks slightly easy than his last race. If he can put his best foot forward I can see him being there or thereabouts.

The ground and draw will affect any price on the day, and an each-way bet is best advised.

The Rose Of Lancaster stakes at Haydock will be there highlight race of the meeting.

There are a number of horses in the race that will fancy their chances. Knowing which horse will run come Saturday afternoon is the most difficult part of picking my selection.

Master Carpenter won so well last time out and if he runs to a similar level here he should take some stopping.

Mahsoob will head the dangers.
