Whitby Cricket Club U17s seal cup final victory
Whitby Cricket Club’s next generation of stars clinched cup glory in the North Yorkshire & South Durham League Junior Cup South final last Friday night.
The Under-17s team were taking on hosts Middlesbrough in the final, and they wrapped up an eight-wicket win with seven balls to spare in an excellent team performance.
Coach Duncan Russell said: “It was a great night as our Under-17s brought home the silverware with an excellent win over a strong Middlesbrough side in the Junior Cup South final.”
The Teessiders won the toss and elected to bat.
Opening the bowling, Kobie Boocock and Mathew Steyert had a steady start, with David Willison and Jack Allanson also not letting the opening batsmen get away.
Russell added: “Middlesbrough didn’t lose their first wicket until the 14th over with the score on 79 , Lewis Dobson taking an excellent stumping off Jack Cairns to dismiss Mathew Maloy for 46.
“Cairns went for just eight runs from his three overs.
“Mathew Sharpe bowled an excellent couple of overs, taking a wicket and only going for five runs.”
Tight bowling and a committed fielding performance meant that Middlesbrough ended their 20 overs with 98-4.
The coach added: “Our reply got off to the worst start when we lost captain Tom Laxton in the first over.
“Lewis Dobson joined John Welford at the crease and and they both played superbly, not really giving any chances in a stand of 68.
“Welford was bowled for 33 in the 16th over and the match was in the balance when David Willison joined Lewis with the score on 71. with 28 runs needed from 27 balls.
“Lewis put the result beyond doubt in the 19th over, taking 15 runs from the first five balls and ending the match with a four.
“His man of the match award was well deserved as he ended 41 not out.”
