Skipper Kai Morris hails Whitby Cricket Club junior set-up
Whitby CC 1sts skipper Kai Morris has hailed the junior set-up at his club, which has brought nearly the whole first team up through the ranks.
The captain said: “I think nearly all of us have come through the ranks. A couple of the more senior players started at Whitby came through the juniors, went to play elsewhere and came back.
“And nearly all of us younger lads have come through the ranks together and been at the club since being kids.
“Developing our own players and backing the young lads is something the club’s always been big on and as first team captain it’s something I’m massively in favour of.
“The most recent is Kobie Boocock, who’s come through all the junior teams then third team, seconds and has now made himself a regular in the first team. He is bowling well and contributing all the time.”
The current crop of young players at Whitby CC are also giving Morris plenty of hope for the future.
He added: “The junior section of the club is thriving and going from strength to strength, it’s something I always try to support and enjoy getting involved in.
“The job that Mike Stones has done during recent years is incredible.
“There’s a team of dedicated of coaches who do a brilliant job working with the different teams (U11s, U13s, U15s and U17s), as well as the All Stars and Dynamos.
“At junior practice night on a Friday there is usually upwards on 50 kids enjoying themselves and it’s lovely to see. I’d definitely urge any parents to bring their kids along and give it a go as it’s a brilliant club to be involved with.”
Morris is also very proud of how his club has come through Covid-19.
He added: “The club’s in a really healthy position on and off the field at the moment.
“The social aspect has always been a big part of the club and that’s never changed, even throughout Covid-19 and all the difficulties that have thrown our way.”
Whitby CC are back in action at Seaton Carew this Saturday in Division One of the NYSD League.
Skipper Morris said: “It was disappointing to be washed out last week as we’ve not really put a foot wrong the previous couple of weeks so it would have been a really good game between two good sides.
“We’ve got another tough game on Saturday at Seaton Carew so hopefully we can carry on our good form from the last couple of weeks.
“All the lads have been contributing so I’m confident we can put in another good performance and it’ll be a good game which hopefully we can come out on the right side of.
“It’s been really pleasing to see how the lads have responded after the first week and hopefully we can carry that momentum on this week.
“We’re all really good mates and it’s really enjoyable that we’re sticking together and playing really well.”
Whitby 2nds play host to Wolviston in Division Three this Saturday at The Turnbull Ground, 1.30pm start.
The Whitby Under-15s team will head to Egton on Sunday evening, 6pm start.
