Finlay's efforts can't prevent opening day defeat for Whitby

Whitby suffered a humbling 138-run defeat in their North Yorkshire South Durham League Division One opener at Sedgefield on Saturday.

Skipper Kai Morris won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first, Sedgefield posting 258-7 from 50 overs as Finlay Morris (3-50), Corey Hart (2-49) and Steven Allen (2-57) chipped in.

In reply, six Whitby batsmen failed to get off the mark as only Finlay Morris’ 75 made a dent in their target as they were all out for just 120.

Whitby will be looking to bounce back when they host Middlesbrough 2nds this weekend.

Whitby 2nds bagged 15 points from their Division Three opener against Normanby Hall 2nds.

The visiting skipper won the toss and asked Whitby to bat first, and knocks of 64 from Lewis Brearley and 40 from Lewis Dobson helped them to post 154-8 from their 40 overs.

Normanby were forced to hold on for a losing draw as they finished up their reply on 100-8.

Steve Crowther was in form with the ball, bagging 3-29, Mark Jackson taking 2-25, with a wicket apiece for Kobie Boocock, Mathew Steyert and David Willison.

The 2nds travel to Rockliffe Park 2nds this week.
