Cayton edge past Ebberston to stay in top spot

Cayton maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 13-run win at home to Ebberston in the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League premier division on Saturday.

The hosts batted first after winning the toss, openers Jake McAleese, 33, and Mikey Dennis, 30, sharing a stand of 53 in just 14 overs to give the Station Road club a solid start.

But after the fall of Dennis after a swift 26-ball knock, McAleese’s more steady knock was ended after 75 balls to leave the hosts on 73-2, then the visitors started to take control with tight bowling from Eddie Swiers laying the foundations for swing bowler Rhys Milner to bag 5-31 in 10 overs as Cayton were bowled out for 155.

The Ebberston run-chase started in similar fashion to the Cayton innings, with openers Jonny Mason, 32 from 54 balls and Ady Turnbull, 20, giving them a good start.

Cayton then brought on spin twins Nick Strangio and Rhys Crowe and this slowed the Ebberston run-rate.

Ebberston skipper Ben Lealman struck a plucky 23, but after his dismissal the home side tightened their grip thanks to top work from Rhys Crowe, 4-22, and Aussie Strangio’s 2-38 as Ebberston ended on 142-9.

Staxton earned their first win of the season with a 48-run success at Forge Valley, with former Valley star Dave Morris returning to haunt his old club.
