Beckett League: Super six make three figures while Pateman and Estill shine with the ball

It was a day for the batsmen in the Readers Scarborough Beckett League as six made centuries while Brompton’s Tom Pateman and Fylingdales’ Mark Estill took nine and eight-fors respectively.

Cayton moved top of the Premier Division after a 99-run win at title rivals Staithes.

Jake McAleese scored a brilliant 104 as his side posted a daunting 257-6. McAleese found excellent support from Nick Strangio, 55, and Tom Sixsmith who made 31. Simon Bowes took 3-68 for the home side.

Despite 40 from Stuart Marsay, Staithes succumbed to the left arm spin of Rhys Crowe, who returned 5-33 and suffered only their tenth home defeat since they moved into the Premier Division in 2007.

Champions Staxton beat Heslerton in a thrilling encounter.

Heslerton were put into bat and made a solid start with Jake Keyworth, 27, and Rob Middlewood, 31, putting on 50 before both fell with the score on 69.

Tony Watson ,42, and Sam Triffitt, 31, added a further 65 before Tom Benthall hit a late unbeaten 25 taking the final total to 194-5.

After the break Staxton slipped to 84-4 when Jodie Robson was caught by Andrew Slaughter off the bowling of Paul Kinghorn for 24, the total moving to 100-5.

When Elliott Cooper was run out with the visitors score on 162 in the 41st over the champions looked in trouble.

Lindon Gray kept a steady head and with two huge sixes kept his team in the match, and four runs were required for victory from the final over bowled by Adam Spaven.

It was not until the penultimate ball that Dan Outhart hit a four to give Staxton victory by two wickets, Gray finishing with an unbeaten 50.

Heslerton’s cause was not helped by conceding 41 extras.

Nawton Grange entertained Ebberston and registered a superb eight-wicket win.

Alex Machin, 45, Eddie Craggs, 31, and 29 from Ben Lockey saw Ebberston post 198 as Nathan Marwood, 3-20, and Michael Wearmouth, 3-28, shone with the cherry.

In reply, Nawton captain Jonny Pickard was in devastating form with the bat as he hit a fantastic 105 not out as he and Tom Garbutt, 77 not out shared an unbroken third wicket stand of 168 to see their side to victory.

Scalby’s revival continued with a comfortable 74-run away win at Filey.

The away side made 243-8 as Jon Barton, 64, and Paul Marton, 49, showed fine form.

Filey’s new recruit Josh Dawson claimed 3-54 before Ben Briggs ,36, Paul Bowes, 34, and Ryan Baldry, 32, all made starts, but they fell well short on 169 all out in 38 overs with Paul Hesp taking 3-50.

Forge Valley picked up their first win in seven matches with a 94-run win at bottom of the table Flixton 2nds.

Valley posted 266-8 as Joe Bradshaw, Tom Brough and the returning Josh Cooper all made half centuries. James Clark made 59 in reply and Geoff Hill 29, but Charles Tindall’s 3-33 and three wickets for Alex Glass ended the innings on 172 in just 28 overs.

Brompton all-rounder Pateman produced a scintillating individual performance as his side won at Cayton 2nds by 43 runs in Division A.

Pateman top scored with 59 not out and he found good support from wicket-keeper Simon Noble, 42, as Brompton posted 164-7 despite Simon Glave’s 3-46.

Paul Pennock made 45 in reply, but he was the only batsman to stand up to paceman Pateman took in incredible 9-56 as Cayton were dismissed for 121.

Seamer remain top following a six-wicket win at Wykeham.

Ian Spence top scored with 34 in his sides 140 all out as Matty Morris took 3-55, before Dave Graham led the response with an unbeaten 62.

Mulgrave continue to push Seamer as they easily won at Sherburn by 60 runs.

Joe Hinchcliffe’s 33 was the main contributor as the visitors struggled to deal with the pace of Daley Wharton 4-52 and Chris Crawford, who took 3-26 in making 138 all out.

Craig Thompson took control after tea and the fast bowler claimed an impressive 4-21 and with support from Andrew Spenceley, 3-4, they dismissed Sherburn for just 78.

Grindale edged home by one wicket against Wold Newton in a low scoring affair.

Wold Newton were bowled all out for 100 with Liam Cousins, 4-8, and Ian Cousins, 3-20, causing the problems.

Rob Norman took a fine 5-30, but 33 from Andy Smith saw Grindale home.

Settrington batted first at home to Cloughton and an excellent 57 from Stephen Beal, coupled with good contributions from Tristan Midgley and skipper Adam Morley saw them post 143 all out as Pete Milner claimed 3-36.

Chris Woodhouse smacked 25 in reply, but a fine unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 77 between Gary Jordan, 47 not out, and Joe King, 21 not out, saw their team to an important win.

Bridlington 2nds upset the form book as they hammered league leaders Staxton 2nds by 101 runs. Harry Burnhill made an excellent, unbeaten 90 and Andy Clay 65 as Bridlington posted a challenging 227-3.

Staxton’s Craig Hill, 38, and Dan Bulman, 37, tried to respond but skipper Carl Parkin registered 5-30 as Staxton were all out for 126.

Fylingdales hit a huge 295-5 at home against Sewerby 2nds in Division B as Barry Heyes made a marvellous 108, Joe Husband hit 77 and Rob Grove made 69.

Sewerby replied well with Calvin Roache making 77, but Estill produced amazing figures of 8-27 to ensure a 20-point win for the hosts.

Another century maker was Ravenscar’s Joe Bayes, who stroked 108 not out against in-form Thornton Dale, while Jish Rewcroft added 37 not out as his side made 198-2.

Lee Oliver hit 74 in reply but Dale were dismissed just nine runs short with only one over left with Will Warwick, Rewcroft and Andy White all taking two wickets.

Ganton’s Ed Cooper made a superb 102 not out to see his side win by eight wickets at Forge Valley 2nds.

Valley batted first and a hard-hitting 73 from Eric Hall set his side up for a competitive total. Tom Varey also made 29 but Richard Bannister and John Bannister both claimed three wickets.

Cooper shared an opening stand of 117 with youngster Robbie Milner, 30, and hit 14 fours and two maximums and remained there at the end as his side romped home in just 28.2 overs.

Bottom of the table Scarborough 3rds made 156-9 at Scalby 2nds with Brad Milburn making 32 and Richard Mainprize remaining 32 not out.

Lee Kerr made a steady unbeaten half century and with Tom Gregory also hitting a beligerant 34 as Scalby eased home with 9.4 overs to spare.

Great Habton registered a win over Ryedale in Division C.

Ryedale batted first and made 241-9 with Nick Ibbotson, 51, Steve Temple, 45, Neil Cowton, 39, and Sam Batty, 33, the main batsmen as Will Curtis took fine 4-52.

Habton’s skipper John Lumley set about the visiting attack and made a magnificent 129 to see his side to 19 points. Will Piercy made 40 and Curtis 36 to provide great support, despite three wickets from Batty.

Jason Oakley’s made a fine 89 and Dougie Bentley 55 as Ebberston 2nds remain top after beating Flamborough by five wickets, despite 5-50 from Harry Burton.

Luke Dixon had earlier set up Flamborough’s 164-5 with a fine 80 not out.

Muston eased to a 78-run home win over Wykeham 2nds.

Phil Robson, 58, and 56 from Max Truelove set up Muston’s 173-6 as James Wilson took 3-33.

Wykeham limped to 95 all out in reply, Johnny Atkinson taking 4-26.
