Hosted by locally-based North Riding Eagles Volleyball Club, with support from Volleyball England, the tournament runs from 10am until 3pm on the beach by the West Pier.

In addition to taking in the action, anyone interested in giving the game a go can take part in an open age, four-a-side social tournament which will run alongside the main event.

Local schools, East Whitby, Eskdale, Botton and Caedmon College all have teams and players taking part in the festival.

And Whitby Seafoods mascot Graham the Seagull has been on hand this week, helping out with some last minute training for students and players at Eskdale School.

With only a few days to go, everyone is working extra hard to ensure that they are prepared for Saturday’s action.

Rosie Donohughe, 13, from Mickleby, has only been playing for a month but loves the game and cannot wait for the tournament to begin.

“I really like volleyball and I’m looking forward to practicing on the beach tonight.”

Great Britain stars, and Rio Olympic contenders Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf will be getting the event underway at Eskdale on Friday where they will be demonstrating techniques and putting pupils through their paces.

They will also be appearing on Saturday and are looking forward to bringing volleyball to spectators and encouraging new talent.

Teams from Scarborough, York, Bridlington, Hull, Middlesborough and Harrogate will all be competing on Saturday and Anthony Laffan, who coaches the Eagles, is keen to engage all abilities and wants to see more locals involved in the sport.

Sponsors of the festival, Whitby Seafoods, will be serving up their popular Whitby Scampi from the scampi camper on the pier for both players and spectators.
