BECKETT LEAGUE: Three leaders suffer surprise defeats

The leaders of Beckett Leagues bottom three divisions all lost their first games of the season, on an afternoon of surprises.

Seamer 2nds lost their unbeaten record, and overall lead of Division Three, after they were comprehensively beaten by Ryedale.

There were contributions from a number of Ryedale batsmen, including 36 from captain Neil Cowton, as they set 192-9.

Seamer’s Jamie Griffin took 3-39, Dan Jewitt and Steve Winwood also claimed three victims each, while team-mate Jamie Haxby made the game’s highest score with 46 in their response, but the visitors’ Kieran Edmond took an impressive 5-18 to inspire his side to a 77-run win.

Kirkbymoorside have moved level with Ryedale at the top of the pile after they did enough to see off Flixton 3rds.

Howard Mudd’s 57, back up by 28 from Andy Bayes helped them up to 158 all out on home soil.

Finlay Ward’s 5-40 had stifled their progress but the target proved to be too much of a challenge for Flixton.

Marley Ward (36) led the reply but three wickets each for Adam Magson and Bayes gave Kirkbymoorside 18 points, putting them level with Seamer 2nds with three games to go.

Flamborough are up to third after stand-out performances by Andy Dixon and Harry Burton set them on the way to a seven-wicket win over lowly Nawton Grange 2nds.

Burton pocketed 5-15, and Luke Dixon 3-19, to dismiss the visitors for 133, John Moxon (35) and Terry Ellis (26) doing their bit to try to ensure the total was competitive.

But Andy Dixon’s unbeaten 58, in tandem with 34 from Rob Traves, earned 17 points for Boro.

Heslerton 2nds conceded their game at Muston.

Division Four pace-setters Snainton tasted defeat for the first time this campaign when Cloughton 2nds beat them by six wickets.

Sean Exley (3-41) and Mark Price (3-49) laid the foundations, allowing Cloughton to bowl the leaders out for 130.

Ben Norman had top scored with 43 but Cloughton only needed 30 overs to chase down the target, Liam Buglass guiding them over the line with 36 not out

Having started the day in second place, Hospitals Rugby Club were unable to close the gap as they were stunned by a fine bowling effort by Sherburn 2nds.

Dan Bean took 5-22, and at the other end Ashley Oldroyd claimed 3-28, as the home side only managed 52 all out.

Nine overs later it was all over, and Sherburn had won by six wickets, turning the form book upside down.

Filey 2nds won the battle of the bottom two with ease, lifting themselves above Lockton.

Half-centuries Lee Plant and Lewis Adams built up an innings of 186-5, but the best was yet to come from Adams.

Outstanding figures of 8-24 saw Lockton skittled for 69, Simon Oxendale (25) the only batsmen to offer any resistance.

The highest individual score of the day in the division came from Wold Newton 2nds’ Steve Harrison. He hit 70, supported by Phil Hall with 45, as they overwhelmed Cayton 3rds.

The Woldsmen’s 175-5 never looked like being beaten, and Chris Hodgson returned 4-27 as Cayton were all out for 82.

A hat-trick of shocks was completed when Division Five front-runners Valley Bar Nomads surrendered their unbeaten record to their nearest rivals, Forge Valley 3rds.

Ben Atkinson made more than half of the leaders’ runs, but he ran out of partners when on 64 and the Nomds’ innings finished on 126.

Anosh George rose to the challenge of protecting their record, taking 5-39, but Eric Hall’s 30 set up Steve Robinson (27 not out) to see the job through.

The lead at the top is now down to 33 points.

Jon Stokoe was the only batsmen to make a half-century in Division Five, as he finished unbeaten on 56 as Ravenscar 2nds beat bottom club Scalby 3rds.

Despite 33 from Phil Perry, Scalby were restricted to 117-9 from their 40 overs as Jon Murrell claimed 3-21.

Murrell also made 30 in reply, as he and Stokoe led Ravenscar to a six-wicket win.

Ganton 2nds may have thought their 188-5 would be a winning score at Muston 2nds, but the home side had other ideas.

Mark Lockwood top scored with 49 and Dan Reardon made 42 not out, with Muston’s Barry Anderson picking up 3-46.

After tea, Ray Roberts led the successful run chase, ending on 44 not out, despite three wickets for Ganton’s James Barber - Muston winning by five wickets in 36.1 overs.

Wykeham 3rds good season continued as they eased past Thornton Dale 2nds by eight wickets.

Brandon Wilson-McGarry took 3-17 as Thornton were all out for 75, before Toby Wrightson (31) and 28 not out from Tom Poor saw them home in 19.1 overs.
