Love Island is one of the biggest TV events in the UK, as the nation becomes invested in the love lives of a variety of singletons living in a villa together over the summer.

However, this year Love Island 2020 will not be going ahead. This is everything you need to know, including when you can expect the dating show to return to TV screens.

A statement from ITV explained that, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, “Love Island series 7 will move to 2021”.

Kevin Lygo, Director of Television at ITV, said, “We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority.

“In normal circumstances we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.”

Laura Whitmore, Love Island presenter, took to Twitter to comment on the situation, “Like with a lot of things because of restrictions with travel, social distancing and unable to plan ahead, Love Island is postponed until 2021.

“Great news is that there have been more applications than any other series! Next year is going to be BIG. Stay safe.”

A mixed reaction

Love Island has been a bit of a marmite television show - viewers either love it or they hate it, and news of this year's seasons cancellation has brought mixed reviews.

One Twitter user wrote, “No Love Island until 2021? Worst year of my life 2020 is becoming.”

Another tweeted, “Love Island brings me so much joy and comfort and even that was taken away from me, cancel 2020 or I’ll cancel by life.”

“2020 is officially cancelled, no Love Island, a f*****g pandemic? ANYTHING ELSE???? #LoveIsland,” wrote another.

It hasn’t been bad news for everyone however, with others celebrating the fact that the show won’t be returning to our screens for another year.

“FINALLY, something GOOD to come out of COVID-19,” wrote a Twitter user in response to the news.

Someone else tweeted, “The good news - Love Island 2020 cancelled. The bad news - it’s coming back in 2021.”
