Middlesbrough U-17 19 Old Brodleians 22

Yorkshire Cup U-17 semi-final

Following the disappointment of last week’s loss in the semi-final plate, Brods had opportunity to put it behind them and concentrate on the next cup match. This week they did not disappoint !

In the first half of the game both teams came out fighting and Middlesbrough proved they were up for the challenge, pressurising Brods from the off, with their physical style of play. Brods held their own for the first 20 minutes, defending well and keeping to their game plan, with strong drives forward by Josh Forrest and Alex Christopher. However, when opportunity arose Middlesbro’ took it with a strong try and conversion to lead 7-0. Brods failed to respond quick enough and missed tackles which saw Middlesbro’ score a second try for 14-0. As Brods collected their nerves and momentum, they worked again as a unit, showing strength in recycling the ball and using their pace to finally respond with a try by Jimmy Hodkinson, Tom Wilson converting to make it 14-7 at half-time.

The second half commenced and Middlesbro’ came out with the same determination, scoring quickly to secure their lead at 19-7. This seemed to reignite the Brods resilience under pressure and they finally saw their their skills pay off with a great run down the wing to see Tom Wilson score. The squad revived and it allowed them to play to their potential, and despite Middlesbro’s attempts they were unable to keep Brods away from their half, captain Cole Wilson taking the next try, and Tom Wilson converting to level the score at 19-19.

With only five minutes of the game remaining opportunity arrived in a penalty kick for Brods, Tom Wilson successfully adding the goal. Middlesbro fought back in the last few minutes but Brods defence held strong with the final whistle blown and Brods the victors.

Brods will now face Sheffield in the Yorkshire Cup Final on Saturday at Harrogate.
