Nothing to fear

Regarding you article College bees - nothing to fear.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Tony Jefferson’s comments about the misconceptions many people have about bees.

I am a relative newcomer to beekeeping as this is only my second year as an apiarist but in that short time I have learnt a lot about bee behaviour and the essential role they play in not only nature in general but in food production.

There is an irrational fear of swarming, the bees are moving home but it isn’t in their mind to go on a mass stinging spree, far from it.

The Whitby Community College have to be commended on their efforts to thoroughly think it through and bring in expert advisors to see what risks if any to the public there may be.

The benefits won’t only be to the students learning hands on with the bees but the gardens of Whitby.

The Whitby Beekeepers open day on Sunday 29 April as reported in the Whitby Gazette will put a lot of peoples mind’s at rest should they wish to attend.

Yours Faithfully,
