The news that Nisa is surrendering its lease shouldn’t come as a shock.
Right from when it first opened it has never looked as if it was staying. There was always something about the supermarket and the way it operated that gave the impression that there was no long-term commitment to the community and for a while now it has looked increasingly like a failing business.
This sorry situation – especially for those who work there - would suggest that the council needs to be far more discerning in its granting of trading licences in order to ensure a more substantial future for Whitby as well as for those who commit themselves to such businesses as employees and as customers.
