It was great to have readers’ feedback to the photo published on 2 September - thank you to those who replied.
As a result I was able to chat to Terry Doran, who has some wonderful reminiscences about working as a photographer in Whitby until his retirement in 1985, and also to the Gazette’s own Jude Readman about her great grandfather photographer. Both had excellent photos to show me.
There was a suggestion that the group photo might be taken at Bobbie’s Bank in Whitby itself, but another person did think it could possibly be Danby. Do your readers have any further thoughts on the picture?
I attach a picture taken by the Dorans. Is it a Regatta Day, a Blessing of the Boats Day (though Terry thought that less likely) or some other event? I’m still hoping that someone can come up with a suggestion for a photographer for Spital postcards!
Also I wonder whether any reader has contact details for the family of Eric Stevenson who had photos published in the Whitby Gazette in the 1940s; he sold some of his equipment to the Whitby Photographic Society when he left the town in 1953, and they then rented his old premises for meetings and practical work. I really would like to contact the family of the late John Tindale, as I’d prefer them to be able to read what I have written about him before the book, Whitby Photographers - their lives and their photographs from 1848, goes to press.
