When we lost the battle to save Helredale playing field we thought that at least the new housing would provide homes for the many families in Whitby desperately needing them.
Or so Yorkshire Coast Homes have told us innumerable times.
Maybe someone from that organisation would now like to explain why the 11 three bed houses, the only three bed ones being built on the site are advertised for sale by a local estate agent.
There are a further five three bed homes planned for St Peter’s Road; no doubt also to be sold as these will bring in the most money.
Out of a total of 105 homes planned to be built over both sites, only 16 are three bed, the rest are made up of 37 two bed houses, and a mix of one and two bed flats plus one bungalow.
So it looks as though many families with more than one child will be disappointed if they were hoping for one of these so called “family homes”.
Finally we do need to make sure that Yorkshire Coast Homes abide by the condition imposed by Scarborough Borough Council, that the homes will only be offered to those on the waiting list who have a proven Whitby connection and who fulfil the other qualifications needed, and not given to those from the rest of Yorkshire who would normally be allowed to bid.
