At the Scarborough Borough Council budget meeting on March 10, I commented on the lack of progress with the repairs to Whitby piers.
I complained that the residents of Whitby are having to put their hands in their pockets to pay a large part of the bill through council tax.
Cllr Plant hailed it as good news that North Yorkshire County Council was going to chip into the cost, although the amount involved seemed to elude him.
It’s not good news at all.
North Yorkshire are making a contribution through the same council tax paid by residents.
It is not new money. Residents are still footing the bill.
The Fight4Whitby group rightly says that repairs to the piers should have been done years ago and if the income from the harbour was ring-fenced, it could have been used to pay for the repairs.
However, I would argue that if the repairs had been done before 2010, the total cost would have been paid for by the Labour government.
Why should local people pay for national infrastructure repairs?
