Letter: Humane way to dispose of dead birds

There are humane ways of disposing of dead seagulls
There are humane ways of disposing of dead seagulls

I picked up a dead seagull from the road on Church Street.

Thank you to the young man who collects cardboard in Whitby for stopping and helping with a bin liner and an offer to dispose of (with dignity) these remains.

He mentioned that he regularly takes seagulls injured on the roads to a local sanctuary.

The start of the tourist season in Whitby sees an increase in cruelty to these wild creatures.

I have seen food thrown into the middle of the road in order that the hungry birds are more easily targeted.

I hope this year we can respect and treasure these birds, whose only crime is to try to inhabit their natural environment of the coastline.
