The Scarborough Borough Council cabinet decision to sell off Whitby Tourist Information/Customer First Centre to the highest bidder on a lease of less than 25 years has been ‘called in’ by local borough councillors.
This means that it will go to a scrutiny committee to examine this decision. This committee will either confirm the cabinet decision or will refer the decision back to a full council meeting to be held in early May. This gives Whitby chance not only to delay the sale but possibly stop it.
The scrutiny committee meeting is being held at Scarborough Town Hall on Tuesday March 8 at 10am.
Three Whitby Tourist Information Centre supporters will present the case against the sell-off and are calling for as many Whitby residents as possible to go to Scarborough to pack the public gallery. This will show the councillors considering the decision the strength of feeling in Whitby about this rushed through decision, which has been taken by the borough council with minimal consultation with Whitby Town Council, local borough councillors and – most importantly – Whitby residents.
We are setting up an e-petition on Scarborough Borough Council’s website. Five thousand signatures are required to force a debate in full council. We invite everyone to sign it.
There is also a Facebook page and a Twitter feed.
I will be going with some friends and plan to be there at 9.45am. I am putting out a call to Whitby residents to join us there in a silent massive protest from the public gallery of the council chamber at Scarborough Town Hall in St Nicholas Street. Speaking will be discouraged but placards are welcome!
