i have been following the story with interest, as I was brought up and lived in the Helredale area up until 10 years ago.
I live in Redcar, Coatham to be precise, we had the same problem.
The council and Persimmon Homes wanted to build nearly 400 homes on the common at the back of our houses. We fought them over a seven year period, finally going to the House of Lords and winning our application for village green status.
Our case which was funded by legal aid actually changed the laws of village green registration. To look at the details, put in Cotham Enclosure, Lewis versus Persimmon Homes and Redcar Borough Council, to find out how we went about things and the fight we had on our hands.
