“I said to myself we have to go there for the Tour de France, but last year it was impossible.

“So I’m very happy to be in Scarborough on the coast for the finish of stage one of the Tour de Yorkshire.

“There is outstanding scenery here - it’s very beautiful. That’s very important - we look for something very interesting for both the riders and the viewers.

“I was a journalist for TV in France and the reality is what people see on TV.

“The diversity of Yorkshire is outstanding. It’s made for cycling - not only for champions but for everybody.”

He added: “I was very impressed last July to see all the smiles on everyone’s faces. I think there will be the same pride on people’s faces tomorrow.

“Cycling is about three things - sport, beautiful scenery and la fête - a party atmosphere. I know 100 per cent it will be the same for the Tour de Yorkshire.

“In three days I will say ‘merci’!”

Mr Prudhomme also commented on a double page spread of pictures in The Scarborough News, showing people’s bike-related displays around town and beyond.

He said: “It’s fantastic - I love that. In other places you just don’t see that. People here are so proud.”
