A man walks into a bar and says to the landlord:

‘Nice pub you’ve got here. Wouldn’t want to spoil the atmosphere here by letting your customers go elsewhere now would we?’

Landlord says ‘What do you know about it... are you local?’

‘Not actually, but I know a lot of stuff. I’ve got a degree in place management.’

‘Ok... what are you suggesting?’

‘Well - you give me £750 a year and I’ll give you £350 back to spend on yourself... but I have to tell you what to spend it on because you’re too stupid.’

‘Right, so what does the rest of it go on?’

‘Well, there’s my wages of course... and there’s a collection fee and the rest of it goes to... well other places... leaflets and stuff.’

‘And what if I don’t want to do that?’

‘Well who knows... like I say, wouldn’t want anything to go wrong with your business would we?’

An episode from EastEnders perhaps? No, just another day in the life of the protection racket that is known as the Yorkshire Coast Destination BID.

I’m getting a bit tired of reminding people that it is not an injection of cash but a tax on businesses who are already paying over the odds on their rates.
